My Students

My students are 9th and 10th grade International Students that hail from all over the world and speak many different languages other than English. From their very first day in the classroom, students are immersed in classes that teach both content and language. The full immersion of my students into the English language accounts for a large part of their success in the future as they can quickly gain the skills necessary to graduate. It is wonderful to see just how much ground they can gain over the course of just one year.

My class is a U.S.

government class and my students have the opportunity to actively participate in a government and a culture that they soon become a part of beginning on day one. Some students come in without knowing a single word in English while others have a better grasp of the English language. In any case, we are committed to building community in the classroom to help one another along and to achieve success in every aspect of participants of government.

My Project

My students are in the middle of a unit on the legislative branch and ways they can influence public policy. Teaching the public policy process to immigrants is thrilling when you see the confidence they gain when you tell them they can have a voice too. To show my students the impact they can have on immigration laws in Congress, I am having them write individual letters to members of Congress on Capitol Hill. In addition to advocating for basic rights, students will also learn how to write persuasively as they continue to learn the English language.

Immigration laws are impacting my students directly and I want them to know they have a voice.

This project will help them find their voice to make positive change. Please consider donating to help make this project possible!
