My Project

I only have a few physical games in my room for the students to play with. But when the time comes for a brain break, they all want to play with them. Taking a break from the digital world is an important component to growing social skills at this adolescent age.

While the students see this time and activities as just games, this actually gives them an opportunity to learn critical thinking skills (strategy to win), social skills such as making eye contact, being a good winner or loser, and grit (to keep playing to try to win.

Covid has had a big impact on student learning, grit and retention. This generation of students are finding that connections between skills, academics and things they enjoy are occurring more often than they are aware - until we point it out to them.

Many of my students don't have games, or even siblings that they can play with at home, so this is a good time for me to build these skills up using the games.

The best way for anyone to learn is for it to be fun, but challenging, yet relevant to who they are. By having a large variety of types of games, this will allow for students to choose what they want to focus on, both in their social and critical thinking levels.
