Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend an inner-city school in Nashua. Our school has a very diverse population with a lot of academic and behavioral needs. Individuals and families with a low socio-ecomomic status, can sometimes correlate to lower educational achievement, poverty and poor health. Most students are receiving free and reduced lunch. Our school is rated below average based on how its students perform on state tests compared with other schools in the state. However, test scores are only one aspect of school quality.

I am trying desperately to teach my students to become a good, kind citizen, which in-turn, will hopefully impact their academics once they feel confident about themselves and what they are capable of achieving.

Egocentricity of first grade students often leads to misbehavior that evokes negative responses from others. These negative responses can lead to a destructive cycle of negative action and reaction. I'd like to help my students replace misbehavior with acceptable behavior.

My Project

These books will provide my students with concrete words, examples and scenarios on how to behave appropriately and what to do if they are struggling with a behavioral or social concern.

The bright, bold colors of these picture books and children's literature will capture my students attention and hopefully embed good choices and good citizenship in their everyday lives.

Some of the books, such as "Accept and Value each person" will help my students accept and value their peers and groups who are different from oneself and one's immediate family, which is a critical social skill. Another title "What if everybody did that" uses humorous illustrations in child-friendly terms, to show the consequences of thoughtless behavior.

I plan to incorporate these books into my every day teaching and use these as a foundation for every subject area. Utilizing these books beyond our Social Studies curriculum is vital in deepening my students understanding.
