My students need iPods so they communicate with a symbol-based communication app that gives a voice to those who cannot speak, have severe sound production difficulties, or severely stutter.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are pre-kindergarten to second grade that attend a low-income school in low country school in South Carolina. They have speech-language disorders (language disorders, speech sound disorders, stuttering,) that are impacted by their autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, learning disabilities. Their range of communication is non-verbal to communicating by using voice in sentences. They desire to talk to their peers and teachers are STRONG. Unfortunately, our school has limited funding and a great deal of the communication apps are Apple products only.
My Project
My students need help with communicating their wants, needs, and ideas. iPods can help them communicate with a symbol-based communication app that gives a voice to those who cannot speak, have severe sound production, or severely stutter. My students need a variety of ways to communicate. While voice, American Sign Language, picture symbols, and communication board are ways to increase language, today society technology is another way. Speech-language impaired students need access to apps that target: expressive language, receptive language, social language, sound production, and voice output for students who have no voice. These students would love to have a voice so that they can communicate and access their education at my school. iPods Touch and apps would give them a voice.
