Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” - Maya Angelou. This quote from Maya Angelou is our class motto. My objective is for my students to continue to be motivated and challenged so that they can keep boosting their own confidence and achieving success to fully develop their self-potential.
I teach a group of special education students who experience learned helplessness every day because they were told that their disability hinders their learning.
In reality, all they truly need is to rediscover the joy of learning. And once that light bulb clicks, my students can bring a positive classroom energy that continually inspires and motivates others. Our school provides such a stimulating, collaborative, and safe environment for students of various differences and abilities that students are often celebrated for their diversity and achievements. I work for a school where teachers put students first.
My Project
My students need the Allowance board game, money manipulatives, and books to understand the intrinsic value of money because they will see and use it during their entire lifetime. Teaching students money will not only give them access to things they want to purchase, but it also builds a foundation for understanding the base ten system of numeration, which will then help them with decimals, percents, and the metric system, vital for science, technology, and even the social sciences.
Money is a critical functional skill for all students, which develops the self-determination they need and gives them the opportunity to live independently in the community.
Funding this project will allow them to use the money manipulatives for practice and learn the different amounts of money. The game will educate them on the responsibility of doing chores, earning money, and the right way to make change. The books will then teach them how to start a small business or how to save and budget their money. In doing so and with your assistance, my students will gain the financial literacy they need to navigate their lives.
