My Students

My students are from a very diverse pool of ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. A charter school in Northwest Las Vegas, our school serves students from both working class families and middle class families which provides both opportunities and challenges simultaneously. Our student body is made up of primarily really great kids, but not all of them have the same level of support at home necessary to support academic success.

Even before the learning loss that came as a result of the pandemic, many of our students had traditionally struggled with reading and writing projects.

This, most certainly, is a reflection of the above-mentioned challenges. Additionally, the fact that we have a good percentage of English language learners and parents who are also learning to master the English language adds to the literacy issues we face as a community.

Our students are, for the most part, motivated to work in class, so the time I get with them each day needs to be maximized as I do not assign homework since I find it does not often get completed. In short, my 50-minute periods, like our students, are precious.

My Project

The data is in from our state testing, and it seems our students have some ground to cover given the learning loss as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Even before Covid-19 sent our students into the unfortunate vacuum of virtual education, they were struggling to write solid, convincing, argumentative essays. Unfortunately, not being in the classroom exacerbated this problem. To be sure, until this past fall, many of my 7th graders have not had rigor in writing since the 5th grade when the pandemic began.

They say, I Say: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein is a masterpiece.

This book provides templates and exercises that help students to "take the training wheels off," as I like to say, when it comes to learning to write persuasively and effectively.

I am requesting a classroom set of this title that I will teach over the course of two years in my Social Studies classes. In 7th grade, students will work with mastering the concepts in the first half of the book, and, in the 8th grade, they will master the material in the second half. My goal is to increase state testing scores in writing by 25% by the spring of 2023.
