Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 200+ students learn Spanish together in the one of the most diverse elementary schools in the state (37% Hispanic, 33% Black, 1% Asian, 3% other). This level of diversity creates a fantastic opportunity for students to learn life lessons about diversity and collaboration.
This is the best time of their young lives for my K-5 students to learn another language; children who learn a foreign language at a young age have more empathy, higher creative thinking skills and score higher on core curriculum testing.
My students' favorites ways to learn include a wide variety of group games and songs. Older students enjoy more independent learning such as Spanish reading comprehension and digital games.
Speaking more than one language can also translate into academic success. As a native Spanish speaker from Chile with nearly 20 years of teaching experience, I know firsthand how languages can open doors to learning and employment opportunities.
My Project
Bolton Academy is one of Georgia's most diverse schools, with 74% of students who are minorities, including nearly 30% who are Hispanic. My 220 students in Spanish classes are at the ideal age to learn a new language, or deepen their knowledge of their heritage language.
Bingo, digital games like Kahoot!, and group sing-alongs make learning Spanish fun, while quality, age-appropriate incentives keep my all my students engaged.
For example, bi-lingual activity and coloring books for Kindergarten and First Graders will enrich classroom learning. Colorful pencils, stencils and even temporary tattoos will motivate all my students to fully participate in Spanish language learning every day--setting them up for academic success for years to come.
