Collaborative learning in a fun setting benefits all 220 of my students, those whose families speak Spanish in the home and those discovering the world’s second most widely spoken language for the first time. When you give to create a dedicated Spanish Language Resource Center in my classroom, you are helping to purchase mini iPads best for little hands to hold and colorfully illustrated dictionaries to engage these young learners. Using this new in-classroom center, I will quickly tailor independent work for more advanced students using the most current iPad apps and websites. We will also have much more time for engaging team-based learning games. The school currently shares similar devices and materials across 30 classrooms serving more than 600 students. Every day I see children lacking in self-confidence bloom as they help their fellow students as a team to win games using vocabulary for everything from basic words for colors to completing phrases to express thoughts and feelings using only Spanish. In a dedicated Language Resource Center in their Spanish language classroom, students can play educational games in an entertaining way on their mini iPads using Quizziz, Quizlet or Kahoots. Students who complete classroom assignments ahead of time will be able to research fun facts or explore related online content independently. A small library of dictionaries will offer additional fun ways to learn independently or in small groups. With only 30 minutes for each of nine daily Spanish class, a dedicated, permanent Language Resource Center means more time having fun while learning and less time retrieving and setting up equipment.
