Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
106 years is the age of the building my students come to every day. Located on the West Side of Chicago, our school serves Pre-K - 8th grade. Our demographic is predominantly Latino with many students learning English as a second language. The entire school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch. Often, students eat more at school than at home. They are motivated and love, love, love to learn. Science in my room rocks. Unfortunately, staff turnover is high and resources minimal so we work hard to get exposure to STEM and hands-on learning. In the fall, we will be studying Newton's Laws which means roller coasters for the 8th grade. These great kits will allow me to teach Newton in a nifty way and provide support while the kids gain confidence in their own ability to learn and work together. Please help my students be great scientists.
My Project
In 8th grade we get to explore Newton's Laws. My students will get the thrill of a lifetime when they work through inertia, potential and kinetic energy, and motion with....wait for it.....roller coasters. Nothing gets my students more engaged than solving cool real-life problems like how to build the most efficient fastest roller coaster. Working in small groups allows me to address the kids as a team and gives them functional experience working with others to achieve success. Students will get to design a coaster, work through a hypothetical budget, create a marketing plan and put their coasters into action. Please consider helping me Rock and Roll (er Coaster) this Fall.
