This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I have 20 fabulous first graders who love hands-on involvement during lessons. Math is the subject where the majority of students benefit from the manipulation of objects. These manipulative allow students of various learning styles to interact with the class lessons.
Being able to see, touch, and move items give students a connection to learning far greater than a lecture alone.
First grade builds the foundation for future learning. Adding and subtracting within 10, fluently, is our long-term goal.
.
Adding and subtracting are everyday skills. Using the rekenreks, students will begin building fluency. As students work in pairs, they will show and explain taking from or adding to. They will see the difference between adding and subtracting. Answering the question, "What happens when we add/subtract?" Students will be given the option of using the tool for independent work.
The role of the rekenrek is to increase fluency while also giving students a chance to be successful.
Eventually, they will move from concrete to abstract learning. This practice will allow them to rapidly recall facts making room for new learning.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
