Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are finishing off a very good year! I have 25 students who range in abilities from 1st grade to 7th grade skills. They are working hard, and that is key for those who are low performing to catch up.
I know they will continue to make great gains this year!
They have limited access to the kinds of books they like. I learned this after one child brought a book from the city library that many of his friends clamored to read. My students have strong interests in reading books that are serials, graphic novels, and have central characters that look like them (my school is 75% Latino/a).
My Project
Students are drawn to graphic novels the same way I was drawn to comic books. They are instantly engaging with short, meaningful sentences and illustrations that support or extend the text.
The latest research shows reading a series of books, like Bone, can "hook" a child into reading!
There are not enough of these books in our school library for all my students. These books will be a great start in my building of a newer, more engaging class library.
I've also asked for some multicultural books. My class demographics have changed since I began teaching, but the books I was getting at garage sales and library book sales had not. The books I've requested are some of the ones I've been checking out from the city library to read to my students. Having them in class will allow them to read their favorites over and over.
