Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How are my kindergarten students supposed to learn to read if there aren't enough books for everyone? We have guided reading lessons every day and we have read just about every book in our classroom. We need your help to get more books for us to read in order to improve our literacy skills.
My kindergarten students attend a Title One elementary school in North Carolina.
Most of my students are bilingual, speaking English only at school, and a few of them have special needs. For many of them, their first day in my classroom was their first time in any educational environment. They have wonderful families who support them and want the best education possible. They have made excellent progress this year and with more resources, they will continue to soar.
My Project
I am requesting 2 sets each of Leveled Reading books A-D, 1 set of Cause and Effect cards, and 1 book of Graphic Organizers.
With the sets of leveled reading books, we can continue our daily guided reading lessons. The students will read the book with me, helping to improve their fluency, comprehension, and sight word recognition, and will then take the book home to read that night with their family. These books range in difficulty so all students will be challenged.
With the Cause and Effect cards, my students can look at the pictures to make the connection between the two events happening. For young students, it is difficult to understand cause and effect in an abstract way so these pictures will help them with that understanding.
With the book of graphic organizers, we can use a variety of them when writing. We write narrative pieces, opinion pieces, and "how to" sequential writing pieces and this book will offer a variety of ways to organize our thoughts and create a writing piece.
With your help, we can provide reading books and other educational materials to help my students' literacy growth.
