All of our kiddos have been identified as having emotional/behavioral disorders. Most of our students have chaotic home lives which impact their ability to feel safe and loved, even on a daily basis at times. Most of our students receive free and/or reduced-price lunch. Our school is very diverse economically and with regards to where our students are from in the world.
Although our students' disabilities do impact their daily life, they are sweet, fun, smart, and kind children; they really try to be the best people they can be and they have wonderful dreams of what they envision for their future.
My Project
Every summer the special education and reading specialist teachers at our school dress up like "Book Fairies", hop on a decorated school bus, and drive to our students' houses to drop off books. We make two deliveries - one in June and one in July. The students have book shopping days before school lets out so that staff members can help students pick books that are appropriate for their reading level.
Students need high-interest books at their level to encourage reading over the summer!
By dropping off books at the students' homes, it ensures that students 1) have access to high-quality books, and 2) have access to books that are at their reading level. Also, it's just fun to see the students outside of school and great to give them a hug! We LOVE doing this every year and the kids look forward to it as well!
