Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a very diverse community. Some of the students are the first in their families to learn English and are usually the translator for their parents. The students want to learn. In class they enjoy using our class netbooks and for some, this is their only time on a computer all day. My class strives to do better at something every day. Not all of my students are working at grade level, but they do learn something new everyday. My class loves working on hands-on activities. They love working together and really enjoy being able to read. Our school is truly a learning community where students and teachers work together to learn and explore. Our classroom is a gateway to learning but it is driven by the students. My class loves to explore and learn new activities and facts. They use technology as an amazing resource to learn.
My Project
StoryWorks Jr. magazines bring another useful Language Arts tool to the classroom. The students use the magazines as a supplement for their Language Arts Textbooks. With the addition of the new standards, the current textbooks can only do so much. These magazines help bridge the gap that the students are lacking in their current textbook. The students love having up to date, and relevant stories to read each month. These stories allow the students to work towards the standards while reading fun and informative stories that are grade and reading level appropriate. The lessons that go along with each story allows students to learn effectively and work towards exceeding the standards in Language Arts.
These students want to learn and need a proper resource to be able to grow to their potential.
With the Common Core standards in place, current textbooks do not provide enough material or information for the students to work to their highest potential. These magazines allow the students to have a useful and needed resource as they explore Language Arts and all that it entails.
