My students are absolutely loving them and are having so much fun learning about money in a hands-on, engaging way. Instead of completing traditional worksheets, they now get to pretend to be cashiers and customers, counting bills and coins, making change, and solving real-world math problems. It's incredible to see their confidence grow as they apply math in such an exciting and meaningful context.\r\nI also want to thank you for the wonderful magnetic math resource you donated. It has been a game changer in helping my students understand addition and subtraction with regrouping. Being able to move the magnetic pieces and visualize the steps has made this tricky concept so much more accessible. Many of my students who were previously struggling are now solving problems with much more understanding and independence.\r\nIn addition, the place value charts you donated have made a big impact in our daily math lessons. My students are now able to clearly see the value of each digit and understand how numbers are built and broken apart. These charts have become a regular part of our routine, and I often hear students referring to them when working through multi-digit numbers. They've truly helped solidify an important foundation for their math learning.\r\nLastly, I want to thank you for the clocks resource you provided. Teaching the concept of time can be challenging, but with these clocks, students are now able to physically move the hands and see how time works in a visual and interactive way. It's been such a helpful tool, and I've seen major improvement in their ability to tell time to the hour, half hour, and beyond.\r\nYour generosity has truly made a difference in our classroom. These fun activities get students involved in ways that regular lessons sometimes cannot. By trying new things, building, and working together, they are learning important skills like teamwork, perseverance, and creativity—all while having fun!\r\n\r\nThe games have also made students more curious and confident. Kids who were nervous about subjects like math or science are now eager to take on challenges. For example, during a recent activity, a group worked together to solve a building puzzle. Originally, when I first considered the idea of introducing them into our classroom, my main goal was to help students give personality to everyday objects. I thought that if children could add a set of eyes to something ordinary—a pencil, a cup, a rock, or even a chair—it would spark their imagination and lead them to describe the object in more creative, humanlike ways. The practice of personification, or attributing human traits to non-human things, is not just a fun activity; it also helps students expand their descriptive language, strengthen their storytelling abilities, and begin to see the world around them in fresh, playful ways.\r\n\r\nFor example, once a child places eyes on a stapler, that stapler suddenly becomes more than just a classroom tool. It might transform into a hardworking character who is always \"hungry\" for paper, or maybe it becomes a grumpy old figure who complains about being overused. In this way, adding eyes can be a catalyst for creative writing, oral storytelling, and imaginative play. Many students who are reluctant to write find themselves more willing to engage when their starting point is a character they've created from something tangible and familiar.\r\n\r\nBut what I didn't anticipate was how versatile these eyes could be across different subjects and teaching strategies. One of my colleagues, who works in a SPED classroom, suggested a completely different application—using them as a tool for teaching multiplication. This opened my eyes (pun intended!) to just how much potential these simple supplies have. She explained that by attaching pairs of eyes to objects, her students could physically see and count the sets in a way that made multiplication concrete and less intimidating. Instead of just hearing \"two times three equals six,\" they could see three pairs of eyes and immediately recognize that the total is six eyes. For students who benefit from tactile, visual, and interactive methods of learning, this strategy made math concepts much clearer and more accessible.\r\n\r\nI had the chance to see this in action, and it was truly inspiring. The photo I've attached shows how the eyes were used in a multiplication lesson. The children were not only engaged but also having fun, which is such an important part of learning. Math can often feel abstract, especially for younger learners or those who struggle with traditional instruction, but turning it into a playful, hands-on activity helps build confidence. It also bridges the gap between creative and analytical thinking, showing that imagination and academics don't have to exist in separate worlds.\r\n\r\nAs we continue experimenting with these eyes, more ideas keep emerging. They can be used in science, for example, to label parts of the body or to make models of animals come alive. They can be used in social-emotional learning, helping students to express feelings by creating faces that represent different emotions. They can even serve as a classroom management tool—for instance, placing \"watchful eyes\" in certain corners of the room as a playful reminder to stay on task.\r\n\r\nWhat began as a small idea for teaching personification has grown into a resource with countless possibilities. It's exciting to see how a simple, inexpensive item can unlock creativity, support diverse learning needs, and spark joy across multiple subjects. I'm incredibly grateful for my colleagues who have shared their ideas and helped expand my vision for this project. Thank you all for your support and collaboration—I can't wait to see what new uses we come up with next!","fullyFundedDate":1663602498388,"projectUrl":"project/googly-eyes-for-personification/6797406/","projectTitle":"Googly Eyes for Personification","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Stein","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/bzstein"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_70333","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":490,"numTeachers":25,"percentFrplEligible":72,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":4,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":88,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"19.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":74.1,"schoolId":70333,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Rio Del Norte Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Rio Del Norte Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/rio-elementary-school-district/rio-del-norte-elementary-school/70333"}
