My Students

Students at our small, rural school have many challenges stacked against them. As a Title I school, many families live below the national poverty level. They depend on food stamps, free school lunches, and weekend food backpacks. In spite of this, our students are reading more than ever. Library circulation is up and students can't wait to get their hands on newly released books.

My students depend on library books as many families simply don't have the means to buy books for their kids.

This project will allow me to introduce students to the classics. I know I won't be able to keep these books on the shelves. As a librarian working class community, I am so excited that students will be exploring literature they haven't yet considered reading.

My Project

I am SO EXCITED about this project! Recently, I learned about Manga Classics. . . a series of books that is publishing classics in Manga Format! The series includes so many of my favorite classics: Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Emma, Pride and Prejudice, The Count of Monte Cristo, Dracula, Great Expectations... well, you get the idea. So anyway, I came across the series at a library conference and I knew that I had to have it for my high school students.

Manga is SO POPULAR in my school I can barely keep it on the shelves - this series will allow me to introduce classic literature to teens in a format they love and devour.

I have no doubt these books will fly off the shelves. In fact, I was able to bring several books back from my conference and I have barely seen them. Student feedback has been so positive about Shakespeare and Dickens, I knew that I had to create a DonorsChoose to get the whole series for my high school library. Thanks so much for supporting a love of reading in our young people!
