My students come from very low socio-economic backgrounds, in which approximately over 80% of the students in the school receive free lunch. I service students with special needs as well as students who are English Language Learners. Many of my students also come from single parent homes and at least a handful have experienced some kind of trauma in their lives that affect them greatly, and in turn, impact their academic performance.
Although their personal backgrounds put them at a disadvantage, they bring their smiles into the classroom everyday.
They’re mathematicians, poets, authors, scientists, and much more.
My Project
My Students are learning that Current Events Reading is Engaging! They need a classroom set of subscriptions to Scholastic News and SuperScience magazines in order to increase reading engagement.
My students need Scholastic News and SuperScience to read up-to-date, at-level articles that are interesting and informative.
These magazines are so important as they help students enjoy reading about relevant and real-world topics.
My students come from very low socio-economic backgrounds, in which approximately over 80% of the students in the school receive free lunch. They do not have magazines in their homes. I plan to use these magazines to teach text features and reading to all my students including those with special needs as well as my students who are English Language Learners.
