At home, many of my students have limited access to technology to help them with assignments that teach 21st century skills such as researching online, typing, formatting, and printing. This is a major disservice to students as they grow up in a world that depends on technology for so much.
My students are sixths graders at a public middle school in Los Angeles.
The majority of my students come from economically disadvantaged households. They face many barriers when it comes to equal access including lack of access to technology both in their homes and in the community.
My Project
With a working printer in my class, my students will have the ability to use our classroom computer and printer to complete their assignments. Since many of my students do not have printers at home, this will allow my students to bring in a flash drive and print assignments at school. Having a printer in my classroom will open up the possibilities of using technology to do research and find information spur of the moment, without students having to travel to their public library after school hours. This will make the lives of my students, and their parents, easier while making my classroom more efficient and giving my students the chance to learn and succeed.
This project will make a difference by eliminating a lot of stress that my students feel when they have assignments that requires printing.
Coming from families where money might be tight or resources may be limited, my students' learning experiences can still flourish with a printer in my classroom.
