Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am the English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher at Burton Geo-World Elementary in Durham, NC. I teach grades K-5. We are a small magnet school with a student population of about 325 students. Our population of ESL students has grown significantly in the past 2 years to approximately 60 students. Most of our children have free or reduced lunch. One of my favorite ways to teach language skills is by playing games with the children. For instance, Candyland is a wonderful way to learn and practice colors. Monopoly Junior is great for reading, counting, and making change with money. An added benefit of these games is that we learn and practice good sportsmanship. The problem is my children do not have these games available at home. After playing these games in class, the children often want to borrow them to play at home. If they take these games home and play them, they are practicing the skills learned in class, spending quality time with their families, and not watching TV. My solution is to let the children check-out the games and take them home. However, I only have six games which makes sharing and planning difficult for me and the children. I have selected the games that I think are best for my group of children. Ideally, I would like to have 2 of each of the following games so that one of each game could be for check-out, and I would have one classroom edition for classroom use: Monopoly Junior, Sorry!, Scrabble Jr., Chutes & Ladders, Guess Who, Clue Jr., Uno, Candyland, and Checkers. With this wonderful “game library” the children will enjoy learning at school and home!
