Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students sure do know a lot about the latest and greatest video games!!! They can name all the characters and how to get to the next level but if I were to ask them if they know how to play simple board games, they look confused. My first graders should know how to play fun board games like Candyland, Mousetrap, Sorry, but... if they don't have the actual games, how can they learn?
This school year I have 14 English Language Learners in my class. I think this is a double whammy.... If we were to receive this grant, my English Language Learners will be able to practice their English skills with one another as they play the games AND learn now to play all the different games at the same time!
I am requesting the popular board games..... Candyland, Sorry, Mousetrap so that my students will 1). learn how to play these games, 2). learn to play these games so well that they teach family members that they live with, 3). practice their much needed English skills with their peers.
I have such fond memories of playing Chinese Checkers with my Kindergarten teacher and playing Sorry with my Dad..... I want this for my students too. Today's children watch too much television and play way too many video games. Board games can bring quality back into family quality time.
