This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students all come from various backgrounds and have different abilities. Some live with both parents, some live with one parent, some live with grandparents. Some live in houses, some in apartments, and some are homeless. All of my students are considered delayed, including cognitively, developmentally, physically, and socially. I have students who do not hear English at home, students who are non-verbal, and students who speak very well. I have students who can write sentences and students who are working on pre-writing skills. All of my students are delayed in some way and need additional help with academics, social skills, and life skills.
To keep my students excited and wanting to come to school, we do many hands-on activities and crafts associated with our curriculum.
We also teach cooking activities, and life skills such as loading and unloading a dishwasher, sweeping, wiping tables, sorting, washing, and folding.
78% of the students at our school receive free or reduced price meals. We also have a large portion of English Language Learners. We have a very transient population in our school serving the homeless, people living in motels or extended stays, and many apartment complexes.
My Project
My students love playing bingo games. They do well with hands-on learning activities, and enjoy them so much more than just paper and pencil activities. Bingo games are great for me too because it reinforces previously taught and new skills. It adds a fun element into learning new concepts and reviewing previously taught skills. The bingo games will be used for our extra down time, indoor recess, and reinforcing the new skills we are learning. Several of my students are working on color and shape recognition while some are working on sight word recognition. We will be able to divide the class into smaller groups and play the bingo game based on their abilities.
