Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 5 year old Transitional Kindergarten students who love to come to school to explore everything that is offered to them. Our school has over 90% of students who receive free and reduced lunch, and over 65% are English learners. Almost all of my students are learning English. While they enjoy learning inside the classroom, it is out on the playground where they really come alive!
A majority of our students do not play outside while at home.
For some, this is due to unsafe neighborhoods, for others, lack of space to play.
My Project
We have a nice, big playground for the TK and K students to use, but are lacking playground equipment. Many of my students enjoy using the monkey bars or going down the slide, but this year's group is particularly interested in playing ball games, such as soccer and basketball.
The students pass a Dollar Tree ball around like they are playing basketball and use a laundry basket for a hoop!
I would love for my students to have other options during their recess time, which is why I would love to have a portable basketball hoop and a few balls.
My students need to exercise, run and play to stay healthy and learn how to take turns and play safely. A basketball hoop, balls and equipment cart will be used by our kindergarteners to stay active, use gross motor skills and work on skills like bouncing, throwing and catching a ball. These skills are part of the Pre-K/Kindergarten standards and will also help the students find a way to stay healthy in a fun manner.
