Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
With our school population of almost 800, 100% of the students are living in apartments. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 85% of our students receiving free lunch. Students have the option to receive free breakfast daily through a program at the school that is open to all students.
Our school has a diverse population of students from various countries who speak a variety of different languages.
Many students will come to our school for the first time and never have learned to speak English.
I have assisted our school in providing a variety of resources such as weekend food bags for students, free eye care and exams, dental screenings, a free food pantry and a clothing closet.
My Project
Using photos in the classroom can assist in teaching many skills when used effectively. Having immediate access to photo paper will allow us to create illustrations for classroom books to enhance language and literacy skills. Students will use the pictures to develop vocabulary, stories and retelling strategies.
Students will enhance their own learning by taking and printing photos that are meaningful to them.
Children will also have the opportunity to see things firsthand that they might not otherwise experience. Students can experience the ocean, zoo or things they may not have the chance to see. I would be able to bring the outside world into the classroom.
