Let's Organize That Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. Let's Be Successful!
Help me give my students the supplies they need to be successful from the day school starts next year. These supplies will be used to teach my student how to keep their work and projects organized.
I teach in a low-income elementary school My students are fighting an uphill battle in more ways than one and they need your help. Each day my students arrive at school after a bus ride of up to an hour and a half. They arrive hungry and tired. When they get off the bus they know that they are a part of a class that is 'different' than their same age peers. My students' are in a Special Education classroom. Their disabilities range from Autism, Down Syndrome, visual processing, auditory processing, intellectual disabilities, and emotional disturbance issues. On top of this, some students also have the additional challenges that come with being second language learners. All my students live in high poverty neighborhoods where crime and violence are considered a natural part of life.
My class is an active and safe place where we engage in numerous activities that allow learning to happen in ways that are as unique as my students.
We also focus on real-world learning objectives where students will be able to manage their lives and their finances to a degree that might break the cycle of poverty. Simply put, we make learning fun and functional.
My Project
One of the best things about being a Special Education teacher is that I get to spend at least 2 years with my students. With that extra time, I can go beyond the usual areas of learning and focus on skills that will help my students become better prepared for real-life situations. The binders, dividers, file folders, pencil boxes, and pencil pouches will all be used to teach my students how to keep their work, projects, and eventually extra-curricular activities organized. We start slow and little by little teach them to manage all their work, due dates, and progress. This, for students who have learning disabilities so severe that they have been removed from the general education setting. They do have learning disabilities, but that does not mean we lower the bar on what can be expected of them. I am happy to say that the students that leave my class and go to middle school are very successful and some have exited from special education. And shouldn't that be our goal?
