This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students in my classroom are are some of the most passionate, creative, outgoing, funny, third graders that I have experienced. They have a thirst for knowledge and love learning new things each and everyday. The wonderment of science keeps them interested and engaged daily. My classroom philosophy is to create a classroom that is clean, comfortable, safe, and yet educationally challenging. I enjoy watch my students think outside the box and achieve success.
I teach math and science in a k-8 building Detroit Public Schools Community District to approximately 60 third graders.
The students are divided into two classes. I team-teach with another third grade teacher.
My Project
I have read several online journals and blogs concerning flexible seating. Online resources such as Research from Edutopia, The Inspired Treehouse, Smith System, and other online resources. These resources have given a ton of reasons why classrooms should have flexible seating. In addition, I have also spoken extensively with a school psychologist about the benefits of flexible seating and more specifically how it would benefit my students in my classroom.
Some of the reasons given are:
1. Increases oxygen flow to the brain.
2. Increases blood flow and core strength.
3. Empower students with control over their environment.
4. Increases comfort in the classroom.
5. Allows students to stay calm, focused, and productive.
6. Decreases territorial behavior wishing the classroom.
