Students come to the learning lab for a variety of reasons. Some come because they need a place to do their work and get movement in at the same time. There are students that come to the learning lab for one on one or small group help on classwork or projects. Other students come to the learning lab for a quiet place to work independently without distractions or noise. Some students do their best work standing, some do their best work with their feet moving, and others need the feeling of being safe and calm. This community of students helps and supports each other.
These students cheer each other on and enthusiastically support each other the best way they know.
Middle school marks an important time and opportunity for growth for my students. They are recognizing how they learn best and are beginning to advocate for themselves to make sure their needs are being met at school. My students need and deserve to have access to a variety of seating options when they are working and learning.
My Project
My students could use a variety of seating options in the classroom. Flexible seating would offer my students the ability to get movement while they are learning and collaborating or have a calm and relaxing space to work and study. Not all students work best sitting in a chair and remaining motionless.
My goal as a teacher is to provide a safe, caring, and flexible academic environment.
We have to meet students where they are in order to help them grow, physically; emotionally; socially; and academically. Providing flexible seating will help these students meet their physical, emotional, social and academic needs while also encouraging them to support and mentor their peers.
