I am a first grade teacher in San Francisco's Chinatown. I enjoy teaching and providing a fun and innovating learning environment for my students. Most of my students are recent immigrants or have immigrant parents, so many don't speak English at home. I am an English Language Development teacher, so I challenge myself to make learning English enjoyable to my students. I want my students to want to come to school daily, and not to be scared to practice speaking and writing their English.
School should be a positive environment for all students. I personally feel that though English is my students' second language, I will maintain teaching the district reading program and make them feel as successful as possible.
I try my best to make reading and writing fun, especially since there are so many concepts and rules that the students need to learn. So after reading a story, we might change the characters and create our own different ending. A first grade concept that my students need to learn is the ability to locate the characters in a story, the sequence of events that happened, where the story took place, and the conclusion.
I'm asking for Lakeshore's Map-A-Story Pocket Chart Program. This is a colorful pocket chart where I'd be able to analyze the story with the students in one central location. The chart asks questions such as who are the characters, where does the story take place, what's the conclusion, etc. And these questions can be changed and adopted to the student's ability. I'm also excited about the chart because it requires the students to participate and we ‘map out' the story together, instead of me doing all the writing the answers they need to help too.
And I'm also asking for 2 boxes of writing prompts for my students to use to improve their writing and can assist them when they're writing stories. I want to use the Map-A-Story as a whole class, and then individually the students will use the writing prompts for their individually created story.
