I have been a special education teacher in a diverse and urban school community for five years. I just started my third year as a resource specialist teacher. What makes my classroom special is that my students are always provided with equal learning opportunities and I never allow my students to give up on themselves. I always push my students to do well and encourage them to keep trying their best no matter how many tries it takes them. My students are absolutely dedicated and passionate about learning in the special education setting.
I want to teach my students to change their mindsets from "I can't" to "I can".
Throughout the few years that I've been teaching, I have met all sorts of students who have all helped me grow to become the teacher that I am today and I thank them every day for that. I have learned that different students learn in different ways and my students learn to adapt their learning styles so that they can continue learning new things. Then they can have the most valuable and versatile learning experience in my classroom.
My Project
My students love to learn and they love to express themselves when they are learning. Unfortunately, due to lack of funding, my students are unable to get the materials they need to help enhance their learning. 80% of my students qualify for free lunches at our school and we are in a communities where 70-80% of our students are children of families who are new immigrants in the United States that are struggling to find jobs and make ends meet. That's why I want my students to have access to materials they don't have at home so that they do not feel limited when it comes to their education.
I work with students in special education and my students have disabilities ranging from specific learning disabilities, to visual impairment, auditory impairment, and etc.
By having the learning resource materials, I can teach my students sight word skills and multiplication skills using the erasable boards and the printed books. Students with specific learning disabilities need to have skills retaught a lot and having the waterproof Post-it notes, I can write down strategies and stick it on their notebooks. The numbers, alphabets, first words, colors & shapes will be used to help my student improve their fluency for reading and recognition of materials taught in class. My students with visual impairment can benefit with having a large multiplication chart to help them visually. The behavior charts and educational games will help my students stay focused and motivated to learn. I want to help my students gain as much skills and learning as they can and that's why my students will definitely benefit and excel in their education if this project gets funded.
