Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a Title I school in a small, farming town. One hundred percent of our students receive free lunch and breakfast. Forty-eight percent of our students are English learners. Although we are located in an older neighborhood, it is a tight-knit community with lots of family support.

My students are inquisitive with a desire to explore and grow. They are eager to learn but have had limited opportunities for enrichment outside of school.

My Project

I work at a diverse school. When I transferred here, most of the books in the library were outdated. Specifically, there were hardly any books that featured POC (people of color). As funds permit, I've been updating our collection. I'll never forget when one of my third graders gleefully showed me a book I had just purchased. My student pointed to the child pictured on the front cover and said, "Hey, he looks just like me."

This project is for 26 books...I choose books written by diverse authors and books featuring main characters who are POC.

I also selected books to replace books lost during the pandemic. When the pandemic hit in March, our school had to suddenly shut down. We did not reopen until a few weeks ago. During this time of unprecedented upheaval, many library books were lost.

The books in this project include cataloging and processing so they'll be ready for students to check out and read immediately!
