Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are served in a citywide program so they come from all over the city. They are a very diverse group and come from many different counties. The students are between the ages of three and five years old. The students are all impacted by autism. There is a spectrum of skill levels within the classroom but most of the students are nonverbal or have very limited language. This is the first school experience for most of the students so we are really targeting those learning to learn skills like attending, responding, following directions, and social interactions.
My Project
Researchers assert that play enhances a child's emotional, social and cognitive development. Interactions with toys and with other people help children to develop their play skills as well as their language. Children with Autism can miss out on those early opportunities to develop critical skills because they oftentimes do not engage in play with others. Children learn to play by watching others use and manipulate toys. Children with Autism often have difficulty imitating others' actions and do not let them join in their play. This impedes them from expanding their ideas of what to do with toys. For teachers to help children with Autism to play functionally they have to directly teach them what to do with toys. I wanted to provide my students with sets of materials so they can watch others play with toys and then model those actions and sounds. This will help to target not only developing their play skills but also their social and language skills. Having a second set of play materials will allow the teachers to model actions and sounds with the toys without having to take them away from the students. Let’s learn to play!
