I teach 22 Pre-kindergarten students. Pre-k is such an exciting group of mixed interests, abilities, and goals. Some of my students are learning to read, write, and count, while some of their classmates are learning to imitate sounds or hold a paintbrush. Our group loves to play with manipulatives, learn new games, and boogie to a sweet tune.
Our school is located in our local wildlife center.
We get to interact daily with animals and it is an amazing experience! My children always want to expand to make enclosures for the animals, draw new pictures to deliver to the animals and recreate the animals themselves.
They all have a win-win attitude and do their personal best to contribute to our classroom community. For this age, hands-on learning is essential. Providing supplies to channel my students’ learning is one of my ultimate goals in the classroom.
My Project
Today children often enter kindergarten lacking the fine motor skills necessary to perform many school tasks. Many young children today are not engaged in sensory activities using their hands. Sadly, technology- like tablets and video games- have replaced activities like play-doh, finger painting, sand/water play.
A solid foundation of small muscle strength and coordination is vital to later success with writing, drawing, and cutting, as well as self help skills for zipping, buttoning, and snapping.
These skills can be easily developed through fine motor play. Learning doesn't seem like work when it's incorporated through playtime.
