This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Many of our students struggle to stay engaged with typical texts and novels, and are unable to work to their best ability due to this lack of interest. However, I have noticed that many of my students have a high affinity toward graphic novels and comics. It is my hope to use this to my advantage and have my students hone their literacy skills through this medium.
Graphic novels are much more than just comics and manga; they can utilize words and art to tell stories with depth and complexity that may not be seen in traditional literature.
The current novel in my project serves as a good basis to help students understand the techniques and nuance in graphic novels to help them better understand and look for these factors unique to the medium as we read and analyze. I am hopeful to slowly build a larger collection of graphic novels for my students, but I feel having a class set of "Understanding Comics" is an essential first step to help us build toward that goal and help my students work toward their literacy goals.
