My school is a neighborhood charter school. We serve three hundred thirty students in Pre-K through 5th grade. 90% of our students are below the poverty line and receive free and reduced lunches. Our zip code ranks highest in our state of incarcerated parents, child abuse and single parent families. Though these stats are staggering, our kids are resilient, determined and one success story after another.
Each year, I am motivated by the wonder and amazement I see take place within my kids.
They are future business leaders, entrepreneurs, artists, athletes, singers, dancers, comedians, and teachers. They possess a grit and determination that is unseen in many adults, and they know that lessons learned from failing are more valuable than money.
We are led by a principal and a team of teachers who are visible, engaged, and invested in every aspect of success for my kids. This team fosters the idea that no matter what your background, you have a chance to make it better through education. We believe that empowering our students with experiences will make them the problem solvers of tomorrow.
This is my first year as a third grade teacher, and in my preparations for teaching Oklahoma history, I realized that we have a serious lack of literacy materials! In today's world it is so easy to just "Google it" when your kids have a question or are studying about a certain topic in the classroom. As amazing as technology is as a resource, it simply does not take the place of a good book! In third grade, we will be learning about famous Oklahomans, as well as important events in Oklahoma's history. I am seeking engaging biography books, to make Oklahoma history come to life in my classroom. Your donation will not only assist my students for the 2018-2019 school year, but also my future students! Your assistance in helping me gather the materials I need to effectively teach will be greatly appreciated!
