Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students in my classroom are excellent at flexing their thinking muscles -- their brains, but we need help in flexing our actual muscles in PE. Many of my students do not have enough physical activity during the day and having limited PE equipment doesn't help matters.
My 32 students are a wonderful and enthusiastic group of individuals.
We are in a diverse part of San Jose in the Tully and McLaughlin neighborhoods. Often times due to the neighborhood issues like gangs and crime, students are not allowed to venture outside and play to get the exercise they need to. In 5th grade in California we take Physical Fitness tests and many of my students do not score in the Healthy Fitness Zone. We need to get them inspired by sports to get moving. In my classroom we just don't have enough equipment for all 32 students.
My Project
Due to budget constraints our school has not had a PE teacher in years. As a 5th grade teacher I am the "everything" teacher including Physical Education. Although I have limited athletic ability myself, I don't want that to limit my students. Right now I am teaching PE with make-shift equipment. We have some basketballs with various degrees of bounce. We have deformed soccer balls that when kicked go in weird directions and our teams are identified by what shirt color they happen to be wearing that day -- the dingy white shirts vs. the assorted sweatshirts. It doesn't look the greatest, but we are trying. It would be amazing to have basketballs that bounce correctly, soccer balls that go in the direction you kick them and pinnies to clearly identify the teams.
In my classroom, one of my expectations is 100 % participation.
I don't allow my students to opt out of their education in any subject. Not having enough PE equipment means having kids wait around for their turn. Having 8 each of soccer balls and basketballs would allow me to have smaller groups 4 so students will have more opportunities to learn athletic skills. In learning these skills at school, I hope to transfer that to more physical activity after school too, so all kids can be healthy
