Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I work in Hartford, CT with 2nd grade students. My students are active and love active learning projects. They have a great sense of humor and love experiencing success. These energetic, students are working very hard to increase their math and reading skills in order to close the achievement gap. Each student brings his/her own unique challenges and come from different backgrounds. Our students need a little extra support and motivation to succeed in and out of the classroom. Many students do not own a computer at home therefore they enter 2nd grade with very little technology skills. This is now a must to succeed in the world today, so they have another disadvantage before ever applying for a job.

My Project

At our school, we have computer based educational programs to enhance student learning, unfortunately, the students do not have headphones to use with the programs. This project will allow students, while in literacy stations in the class to use the computer-based learning programs. No student will be left out without headphones, and be forced to listen or speak quietly.

Some of the programs the students will benefit from are Lexia Core 5, which helps our students learn foundational skills.

Using Reading A-Z allows our students to to listen to the books on their level, before reading the book on their own.
