Let's Have Students Float Into Reading!

Help me give my students high-interest books such as Big Nate and Graphix Chapter Books, as well as individual pool floaties for socially distanced reading spots.

My Students

I teach the most amazing 3rd graders. Our neighborhood school serves students from PK-5 and is located in a very diverse area of our urban city. Our school focuses on building a community of learners and supporting children to develop socially and emotionally, as well as academically. We are over 80% free lunch and have many English Language learners.

Reading is the highlight of our day, whether it's me reading out loud or they reading to themselves.

Since we spent last year, online, I want to give them opportunities to hold books. Starting the school year off with a rediscovery of the joys of learning and reading in a classroom, I need to provide spaces and books! These floaties and books will immediately spark their attention and make reading quickly accessible.

My Project

In just under a month, we will return to in-person learning after 1.5 years of learning during a global pandemic. Many parts of our day will look different; students stay only with their cohort, have their own desk that they must stay at, and they must wear a mask and practice social distancing. So much has not changed, however, including my desire to provide students constant access to juicy books and make a classroom space that celebrates reading.

Finding comfy reading spots around the room with a pillow and a friend used to be a highlight for many students and I want to recreate that magic in a safe way.

Pool floaties are easy to clean and can be used in students' individual spaces. Having the option to read in a fun spot can help many students stay engaged. Once they have a comfy spot, they need access to books they can't put down. This project is filled with highly readable graphic novels and beginning chapter books to help students engage with reading again after so long at home. Thank you for helping me create a fun, safe, and engaging space for my students to become lifelong readers.
