My Project
My students are very diverse in ethnicity, cultural heritage and regional upbringing. Our student population is compromised of Asian, Caucasian, Hispanic and African Americans. They are mostly Asian students of Chinese decent. We have students newly immigrated, where they are learning both English at school and their native language at home from their parents. This project will help my students strengthen their Asian-American Community.
My classes are mainstreamed with English Language Learners and Special Education Students with mental, physical and emotional challenges.
We have a wide range of ELL, English Language Learners, from Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish to Italian. My school is currently 100% free lunch. We are a neighborhood elementary and middle school with about 1300 students. We accept every child that enters our doors and registers. We have Kindergarten through 8th grade. We have five of each grade level.
My students would greatly benefit from the clay and glaze materials. This will provide them a more diverse fine arts education that will include ceramics. My students will learn and acquire skills and techniques from creating art with clay that they can use in the future. My students will learn about ceramics and the process of creating a clay sculpture. They will create a clay sculpture inspired by the "Pokemon" culture. The "Pokemon" culture is a very popular globally. It crosses languages and social economical status. They will also learn about how to start a project through the brainstorming process, the art creation with studio time and the completion of the project. In addition, my students will learn to work with various materials, tools and to clean up after themselves. My students will learn more about a global sub-culture of "Pokemon".
