My students need a vibrating mini dome, tent, lighted musical tambourine, adapted mini bubbler and lumindisk to help them to be engaged in their environment.
My students are wonderful young children who have so much to yet to discover. My students are eager for the opportunity to discover those adventures. I want them to experience life to the fullest by engaging them through their senses-all of them!
I have 4 middle school aged students that are severe and profound, medically fragile with multiple disabilities.
Being on a cognitive level of infant to toddler, they are presented with so many challenges, to walking, providing their own self-care, even feeding themselves. They are non-verbal, bound to wheelchairs and in need of constant care to perform even the simplest of tasks.
In addition to what I can provide for them, they receive a variety of services on a weekly basis that consist of speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, vision, and even music therapy.
My Project
A multi-sensory room will allow my students the opportunity to explore and develop their senses and skills through active play. In collaboration with therapists, we can engage my students in active learning in the multi-sensory room. The vibrotactile activities such as the vibrating mini dome and the somatosensory tubes will encourage motor movement that will provide my students with visual, auditory, and tactile stimulation, and the concept of cause and effect. A tent "The Den" will allow my students a place that they can go to in which they can experience yet another tactile environment and they can explore how sounds and lights are different due to the new space.
Auditory processing activities such as the lighted musical tambourine will allow my students to have control of lights that flash, to hear the music and feel the vibration of creating music. Visual activities such as an adapted mini bubbler will allow my students to learn cause and effect.
My students thoroughly enjoy activities that involve music, vibrotactile, touch/pressure, auditory, visual and even vestibular activities.
These items will allow them the opportunity to explore using all of their senses.
