This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in the 21st century surrounded by technology everywhere. However, one of the few places they lack sufficient technology is the one place they spend 7 hours of their day, the classroom. My goal is to use the Chromebooks to bring their History learning into the 21st century.
The students in my classroom are a diverse group of eighth graders.
They come from various racial and socio-economic backgrounds. They are all good kids who come to school each and every day for new opportunities to learn and improve. Despite their enthusiasm, our middle school still lacks the tools and supplies necessary to educate them in today's world.
Our middle school is a 6-8th grade school with over 1,000 students. Even though there are about 25 computers for every 100 students in each cluster, it is clearly not enough. The computers must be shared by all the teachers and many lessons lack the opportunity to delve into American History or individuals because the computers were signed out by another teacher that day.
Due to these restraints, many of our students are actually lacking 21st century technology skills that would be expected of students. Many struggle with word processors, Internet research, and critical thinking using technology.
My Project
The uses of chromebooks in my classroom are unlimited. My ultimate goal is to have a paper-less classroom where students use Google Drive and the resources on the Internet to learn writing, analytical, and research skills to expand their knowledge of American History.
Three chromebooks would be a start where students can utilize Google Drive, my classroom website, Google Classroom, and other online resources to create presentations, projects, and other creations. I hope to use these chromebooks to have students create their own websites on History topics like the Great Depression and World War II. I also would like to see them master vocabulary and content using Google Presentation and Docs.
I look forward to seeing my students' faces brighten up when they have their very own History chromebooks to expand their learning and minds.
These chromebooks in the classroom will allow students to not only see History come alive before their eyes, but also have them actively engage with History content and skills using technology of today. Students will become more motivated and excited about History and school if they see the resources provided for them.
