I teach in a high poverty school. I am a first year teacher, teaching a dual-emersion (Spanish) first grade class. My students are learning English and Spanish and in many cases, come from lower income families.
I do not have a writing easel, which makes it difficult to do interactive and shared writing. Shared writing allows students to participate in creating a story as the teacher writes it. The students usually gather on the rug in front of the easel, allowing the teacher to model good writing. The teacher is able to demonstrate proper letter formation, capitalization, complete sentences, and many other lessons in writing.
Interactive writing allows students to come to the easel and actually help write the story. Not having an easel makes it more difficult to teach writing in a first grade class. A writing easel also functions as a big book holder, which allows the teacher to read a big book, hands free. Without this easel I struggle to hold the big book, as I read.
I need a writing/big book easel which would allow me to read a big book hands free. It would give the students the opportunity to see the pictures and follow along, without the book moving around, because I'm struggling to hold it. I would use this easel to do interactive and shared writing. Students would have the opportunity to come to the easel to demonstrate their ability to write letters, words, and sentences correctly, which is so important for an early learner. We would be able to use this easel for math and all other subject areas.
I'm asking for your donations, so that my students are given the opportunity to experience learning with the proper equipment. Your donations will give my students a tool that will help them participate in their learning and hopefully become successful writers. Your gift to my class will help future "little writers" for years to come.
