My students often ask me, "when am I ever going to use science in my life?" I tell them it is not the just the content that is important, but it is the way science requires you to approach problems that is truly valuable.
My students want tangible learning experiences that have real-world applications.
Students at my school have limited resources to engage in truly immersive learning in the science concepts that interest them. This is compounded by the fact that often times, even the essential supplies needed are not available.
We have in our possession a Vernier Labs Gas Chromatograph. This is some serious business. It is an amazingly useful piece of laboratory equipment that opens up opportunities to perform some truly engaging lab activities.
What we lack is the tools to actually use our gas chromatograph.
The 1 micro liter syringe used to inject samples into the machine has fallen into disrepair and the software that runs the GC is no longer available.
The requested materials will allows us to get our equipment back in the game. New syringes to inject our samples, and Vernier Labquests that will actually run the machine. Temperature probes and a pH electrode will aid in increasing the utility of this new equipment, furthering the possibilities for my classroom.
