My Students

We get Smarter Together! Each day my students and I spend time sharing out something that someone learned how to do or created. It may be a new game, a strategy another friend used to solve a problem, or a piece of art that may inspire others. Then they set off to explore, practice and play.

I work in a K-2 elementary school that is continuing to evolve its practices through inquiry and play in order to engage not only children's minds, but also their hearts.

My 18 students are curious, eager and passionate Kindergarten students. Some of them have been identified as having specific learning needs or challenges. Together we all learn new habits and skills, as well as how to learn from each other. Most importantly, we practice the motto, "Nothing without Joy" by Loris Malaguzzi. We learn that play, fun and deep learning are not mutually exclusive.

My Project

Let's all get Smarter Together! These hollow blocks will allow children to develop ideas to the question, "How do engineers and scientists solve problems?" These hollow blocks are very large, children can sit and sometimes stand on them. As a result, they're engaging, but can also clearly demonstrate design problems and successes. Children can identify a challenge, such as how to create a low bridge from one block structure to the next, and then work together to create plans and sketches, try out different blocks and planks and then share what strategies worked best.

This project will improve my classroom by making important experiences in exploring the engineering process in large, gross motor ways.

This is particularly important in my classroom because we support children who may have challenges with spatial awareness, visual-processing and fine motor skills. As compared to smaller table-top activities, these large blocks can allow each child to engage in deep learning without being hindered by particular areas of challenge!
