Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The thrill of winning after preparing for a competition. That is what my students experience by participating in Battle of the Books, a district-wide reading competition.
In the past six years, the interest in Battle of the Books has tripled.
In order to be competitive students need access to the books.
Our school is a Title I school, which means that almost 100% receive free or reduced lunch. We have a high Hispanic and African American population. Many students struggle with reading and read below grade level. Battle of the Books has sparked an interest in reading that did not exist before!
My Project
My students need seven copies each of five books: Twelve Days in May: Freedom Ride 1961, Stef Soto, Taco Queen, Towers Falling, Maxi's Secrets, A Boy Named Queen to compete in a district wide competition called Battle of the Books. Battle of the Books is a competition in which students of eighty different schools form teams, read the same eight books, and compete in a Jeopardy-style competition. Students first compete at the school level. After the school level competition, one team advances to compete in the district-level competition. The interest in Battle of the Books has more than tripled since we began participating in 2011.
Students will use these books to prepare for the competition.
Having multiple copies will give each team equitable access to the assigned books.
In order to be competitive in Battle of the Books, all participating students need to have access to all of the books.
My eventual goal is for all of my teams to have at least one copy each of the assigned eight books.
