Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At my school students come from very diverse backgrounds and this year is no different. The majority of my students this year are new immigrants and are making great progress and learning to navigate their way in an English-speaking classroom.
I am excited to see what paths these young students will choose for themselves and learning to read is the first step in that journey.
Students will also listen to books read by fluent readers such as classroom teachers, guest readers and other students. The books I have chosen from “Space for Bilingual kids (espacio para ninos)”, to “What Do I Say? (Que Digo?)” to “Who Lives on the Farm (¿Quién vive en la granja?)” to “I am Bilingual and it's Amazing (Soy bilingüe y es sorprendente!)” are written in both Spanish and English. These books can be enjoyed in the classroom and sent home for the parent/grandparent to read in Spanish. The books will also be used when our 6th/7th Grade Reading Buddies visit our classroom. My students will be able to listen to older students reading their favorite books fluently in Spanish.
Please help us bridge the gap in language acquisition for our predominantly Spanish speaking students who are learning to speak, read and write in English. Our school community is located in a high-poverty area and the school is a haven for students at our school. I am so proud of the effort the students make every day despite everything that they have experienced in their young lives. Engagement and focus are keywords in our changing learning environment.
