Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school has over an 85% Latino community. This is our first year having dual language in our school, beginning with kindergarten, and it will continue to expand one grade up every year. What makes my students special? They are bilingual learners who want to expand their math and reading skills regularly. Most of the parents do not speak English, so these children serve a major role in translating at an early age. I would like to support them by providing them with engaging books that they may not be able to afford or find at home.
My Project
I will be creating a leveled classroom library for my students. I hope that they will be excited to practice their reading and move up to the next level if they have many choices to pick from. For this project, I am focusing on my second grade students. I would like to give them an area where they can not only find their books easily, but also be excited for the next choice. As a Latino student myself, I never had books at home that were interesting or engaging. It was difficult for my parents to support my reading at home. Therefore, I would like to be able to help my students, by providing them with books that are not only engaging, but educational as well.
