My Students
Do you remember when President Kennedy challenged our nations youth to become more physically fit? It was 1960 and video games weren't a part of children's lives. My student, like the national average, spend 4 hrs. a day watching TV or playing video games. We need to "Get Physical".
Located in an inner city, dominated by apartment complexes, my students have little access to play grounds and safe parks.
Each year my 5th graders are challenged to pass the "President's Physical Fitness Test". Run a mile, sit-ups, push-ups, and flexibility are difficult activities for my sedentary students.
My Project
Imagine a boot camp like fitness circuit. Fitness balls for sit- ups and push-ups. On to the ladder agility station, challenging kids to keep their knees high and their heart rates also as they race through the different stations. We will do bear walks, crab walks, and shuttle runs. On to the next station quickly, we will work those muscles with resistance bands. Next, shuttle runs and on to hula hoops, and jump ropes. Round and around we'll go for 20 minutes daily reaching the state required 100 minutes a week of physical education.
Our school has jump ropes, hula hoops, and traffic cones for setting up stations.
We need the agility ladder, yoga mats, fit balls, and resistance bands to make their boot camp circuit complete.
If you have ever taken on the challenge of a boot camp and completed the circuit with sweat streaming down your smiling face then you can imagine the challenge and the fun I want my students to experience.
