Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Dore Elementary School is ready to tackle the obesity problem in America. We have decided to start a Step-Aerobics unit for our over 500 students. We plan on implementing the steps in all grade levels of gym; whether it be during a step aerobic lesson or just simply using the steps for certain exercises during a fitness unit. We have over 500 students in our school who at most, have gym 2 times per week; many classes only get gym once per week. We know we need to do a lot in that short amount of time to get the kids on track to lead healthy, active lifestyles. By incorporating a step aerobics unit, they will be introduced to a new form of cardiovascular exercise that we are hoping will become a regular activity that they will enjoy and want to partake in for the rest of their lives. I happen to be a 5th grade homeroom teacher whose class gets shortchanged for gym. They meet only 3 times a month. That is unacceptable and I want to be certain that they are getting the most out of those 120 monthly minutes. We are in need of 15 steps to get this program off to a successful start. Hopefully, very soon we will need 15 more steps because of a the huge success of the unit.
