Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our student population may be described as "underprivileged " but regardless of their circumstances, our students come to school ready to be active participants in their education. I'm overprivileged to work with our student population identified with learning challenges in 2 elementary schools classified as economically disadvantaged. Over 90% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. It isn't uncommon to be working with students who have experienced trauma, are in the care of the foster care system, or are homeless. It's my personal pledge to never allow our students to be defined by a label or their circumstance.
School-aged children are in constant motion and that motion is compounded for students with hyperactivity.
On average, every classroom of 30 students has 1 to 3 children with ADHD. 40% of youth with diagnosable ADHD symptoms don’t get treatment. Typically, I work directly with the 1 to 3 students in a classroom who are constantly on the move and need an outlet for their energy. I'm continuously seeking to fill my teacher toolbox with resources that will support the physical, emotional, and academic needs to reach every student since they may not have access to resources they need outside of school.
My Project
In school, hyperactive children squirm in their seats, jiggle their feet, tap their pencils, and talk incessantly. They might even get up and roam around the classroom because they can’t resist the impulse to move. If you tell them to sit still or stop fidgeting or talking, they’ll be at it again within minutes.
My students need frequent opportunities for movement built-in throughout the school day.
The requested equipment will be used mainly in the general education classroom but is portable and can be moved around the room or building. The ball chair will enable the students to direct their natural kinesthetic energy and need for movement in a positive way, because the child has to constantly move their body on the chair to maintain balance. The pedal exerciser will be used under the desk during instruction or independent work time when the student needs to fidget. The strider and stepper machines will be utilized inside the classroom when the students are in need of a short movement break. When the students are provided with a supervised movement break outside of the classroom, the DVD instructional videos will be offered as an activity. To limit disruption and utilize time, the students will be taught how to insert the videos into the DVD player and they can then put on headphones and follow along with the tutorials for a set amount of time.
Ultimately, by not having to focus on keeping still because they will have access to resources to support their movement needs, it will free up energy for learning and enable my students to produce a higher quality of work or increased participation throughout the day.
