My students need outdoor and indoor physical activity materials such as balls, puzzle mats and other activities to complement our Health Promotions School Policy.
It's a new year and that means it's time to get in shape and stay active. New indoor and outdoor physical activity materials will allow these special kids to do just that.
My students are in a self-contained special education classroom.
With significant cognitive delays and impediments, my students can be challenging but always rewarding. The students range in age from Kindergarten to Fourth Grade and follow an adapted core curriculum designed to meet their unique needs.
Most of my students come from high poverty but very loving backgrounds. They absolutely love coming to school and all are very eager to participate and learn as much as possible. I have had the good fortune to watch several of my students grow over the past five years and they are a very important part of my life.
Our inner city elementary school is one of over 120 district schools and we are constantly fighting to overcome the barriers that poverty present. My students, like all of the others in my school, ask only that someone believe in them. Believe in them we do!
My Project
All of my students have significant fine and gross motor delays that greatly impact not only their ability to participate in the general curriculum but also impact their quality of life. The Hop Balls, Gross Motor Skills Set and Balance and Flexibility Skills Set will help address those motor deficiencies.
With limited playground equipment, the Sports Balls, Competition Plastic Discs and Catch-Pitch-Stick Mitts will provide us with the materials to play organized sports while on recess and in physical education class. The ball bags will of course be very helpful in transporting materials in and out of the classroom.
Finally, we do have our fair share of bad weather around here and sometimes we have to find physical activities to do inside. The Square Activity Mats, Hopscotch Puzzle, Bean Bags and Mesh Balls will all allow us to still get fit on those cold and rainy days.
Our school is a Health Promotions School and being located in a highly urbanized area that offers few outdoor recreational activities, that's an important thing.
Alas, budget cuts and a struggling economy have limited our ability to purchase new materials and activities that work so well at making sure every student gets the physical activity that they need. These great materials will go a long ways toward ensuring that my students have that opportunity.
