Help me give my students Comfy Floor Seats, a pencil sharpener, and a chart so that they have the organizational tools they need to succeed and thrive!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My fourth grade students are inquisitive, excited and adventurous. Many of my kids come from a high poverty/low income household. With that being said, they love to learn, which shows in their excellent attendance. When they arrive for their upcoming year, I want to be able to provide the basic, necessary tools for them to achieve what I know they can.
"My daughter told me about a scientist whom you were discussing in class." I was ecstatic when a parent told me this after school one day!
The fact that my student was making connections with what we were learning in class to real-life activities made my heart smile.
I tell my students that what they have and where they live do not define who they are. Even though most of our school's population is on the lower socioeconomic scale, anyone can succeed if they have perseverance and fortitude. My requests are specifically to maintain that my students begin their school year on the same playing field as others, in order to achieve their goals.
My Project
This year, I have more students than ever before. With that, comes some logistical issues. Our goal this year is to become a bit more responsible for our own learning. When a student take ownership of his/her assignments, they fell more gratified and fulfilled.
In order to thrive, each student needs to feel a sense of independence and pride.
With the materials chosen for this project, the students can utilize many of them on their own. For example, the Math manipulatives can be used for reinforcement or enrichment. Also, the flexible seating can lend itself to reading quietly on their own when others around them are not finished with their work.
